How to Build Your Network at a Co-working Space

When joining a co-working space, most people love the idea of networking, and getting to know the people in the space. However, when walking into a new environment, some might feel anxious and hesitant, especially when it comes to connecting with different individuals. Networking is an essential part of business and personal development, how do you go about it in a co-working space? Below are some tips:

  1. Strike up a personal conversation: At L’Atelier we have a common kitchen area and a huge hot desk space. When people are moving around, they are bound to strike up random conversation. Whether it’s going for a coffee run, or sharing the lunch table, personal conversations are an excellent way to get to know people, and figure out your common interests.

  1. Get to know more about each other’s business needs: In order to assist our members networking efforts at L’Atelier, we started a Matchmaking Board, whereby people can exchange their business needs. Need a website developer? Someone at the coworking space might be your perfect fit. No need to branch externally when you’re sitting in  a hub of creative freelancers, business developers, programers, and designers!
  2. Talk about what you have to offer: don’t be shy when it comes to marketing yourself and your business! As part of our newsletter, we have a “Meet our Members” section that helps freelancers market their own business. Explain to people what you do, and offer them special rates as fellow coworking space members. But of course, don’t over-promote yourself. Know how to take no for an answer.
  3. Attend organized events: Get involved in member events! The best way to get to know people is to meet them in informal settings. At L’Atelier we make sure to have at least one event a month that gets our members together in an informal way.
  4. Host your own event: as part of a coworking space, you have access to more members and connections than the average freelancer. Take advantage of the space and ask the manager on how you can utilize the space to expand your connections and business. Most members get extra special rates for space rental and meeting room booking, use them!
