Where are you from/ where did you grow up? Any stories from your past that you'd like to share?
I grew up in Cornwall, England, but spent many childhood vacations visiting B.C as I have dual citizenship. My great grandparents emigrated with their siblings after WW2 and although my gran moved back for university (and to have her children) the rest of the family stayed. Those of us that lived in England have slowly made our way back out here too - leaving only 5-10 of our relatives in England.
I moved here myself in 2009 to attend UBC, and brought my mum with me! She’s lived here ever since but I’ve wandered around the world a little, making my way back to Vancouver in 2014.
What do you do/ what are you passionate about and why did you choose to do what you do? Any exciting projects to share or maybe an unknown facts about your line of work?
I’m a graphic designer, photographer and business owner. I’ve always been interested in entrepreneurship having grown up surrounded by small, independent businesses; I always knew it was something I wanted to do and I just had to figure out the what and how.
I studied Fine Art with a focus on textiles and photography after which I worked as a photographer and coffee shop manager. Alongside this I founded a barista competition, and in doing so realized I was a designer at heart. I went back to school in Vancouver before jumped straight into self employment.
It’s safe to say that both business and art are my passions - I believe that they go hand in hand these days, and you really can’t be a successful creative without a little business savvy.
Is this your first time coworking? What made you choose to work at L'Atelier, what's your favorite thing about the space/ environment?
It’s my first time co-working from an office like this and I love it! I was working remotely with an agency for a few months prior to joining L’Atelier, and we were constantly searching for ways to maintain team communication as well as our beloved freedom (and yoga pants!). For me this is the perfect balance and makes me feel like an actual business owner.
As a freelancer/ small business owner, there’s only so long you can meet clients in coffee shops before you need to do the real deal and feel legit. L’Atelier being such a beautiful space has given me a gorgeous, impressive space in which to work and meet with clients. I’m really proud to be part of the community here and love to welcome people in and show it off!
